IN BRIEF: Pleasantly average.

Long running trance fans should at least be somewhat familiar with DeepBlue Records, thanks in no small part to the label being Solarstone’s original outlet. Though Mowatt’s since moved on, DeepBlue has continued to support up-and-comers, and occasionally exposing new producers to success in the process (FKN and Adam Nickey being the most notable …and Bobina, I guess). For this latest single, the label takes yet another peek at what’s been going on in Eastern Europe.

Actually, this is something of a piggy-back release for Russian-based label Sundesire Records, which Sergey Romashkin runs. Coming along for the ride is Mr. Antonescu, or N-Tone, whose blend of singer-songwriter dance-pop has garnered him moderate success in his homeland. Specifically, N-Tone brings piano flourishes and singer Lorraine. Hmm… trance, piano, female vocalist, “love” in the title... This is already starting to sound cliché, isn’t it?

And for the most part, Need Love is. Oh, it’s a pleasant type of cliché but we’ve heard this type of song for years now, mostly from the Anjunabeats camps. To their credit, N-Tone and Romashkin don’t oversell the song, so it remains perfectly nice and tranquil on the musical front. Lorraine, however, doesn’t do much to distinguish herself as a singer, coming off as interchangeable as most trance vocalists typically do.

The remixes feature a couple other Sundesire regulars, JMV and Aurum Beats. JMV’s rub isn’t much to get excited about: he keeps the tone and tempo, then adds moderately side-chained strings to the track, ruining the music in the process (seriously, guys, it’s just not a good sounding effect for trance, even if moderately used). Aurum Beats, however, turn in a rather vibrant remix, with a rhythm and added synth riff that’s actually -dare I say it- a little funky. It’s the kind of track that would work quite well at peak time, as it does a good job in building energy -even the breakdown is handled well. Oh, and the dub versions are better in both cases -Lorraine just isn’t a strong enough singer to carry these tunes, studio-enhanced or not.

Need Love is an alright single, and may garner the Sundesire guys a little more exposure should it get playlisted by the usual suspects. That’s about all to say about it, though. It’s strictly an average trance release that will please fans of this sort of sound, but only the Aurum Beats dub will get the attention of anyone else.
